Kentucky Cardinal to be Discontinued

According to the NARP Hotline, Discontinuation notices for the Kentucky Cardinal were sent January 6 by Amtrak to Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky. In his letter to employees, David Gunn said that this not a sign of more extensive route cuts coming. Instead, he wrote, "The Kentucky Cardinal is unique, because it was started a few years ago as a single coach service based on the idea that the express business would be profitable." The notice is for 180 days, meaning the last run of the train will be on or about July 9.

The train has been plagued by a number of factors which include the failure of the concept of a rapidly expanding express business, slow running across Indiana (albeit at night), irregular equipment assignments (including long stretches with no sleeping car), and a lack of funding from states necessary to inves in improvement of the route (such as faster running in Indiana or extension to Nashville).

AMTRAK ANNOUNCES TEMPORARY SCHEDULE CHANGE FOR THE PALMETTO AND SILVER METEOR
New schedule result of work on tracks

WASHINGTON - Due to planned work to improve track conditions through South Carolina, Amtrak's Palmetto and Silver Meteor services will soon begin operating on revised schedules. This change is temporary and will be in effect from January 15 to February 19, 2003.

CSX Transportation, which owns the tracks, will be completing the work between Florence and Charleston, S.C. The affected trains are train 90, the northbound Palmetto, and train 97, the southbound, Silver Meteor. Both trains travel between New York and Miami daily.

"We appreciate our passengers' patience as we implement this temporary schedule change," said Joe Wall, general superintendent of Amtrak's Southern Division. "With the planned track improvements, passengers can look forward to a more comfortable journey."

Train 90, which usually departs Miami at 5 p.m. each day will operate two hours earlier. The first train to travel on the revised schedule will depart Miami at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, January 15. The earlier departure will continue daily until the normal schedule resumes with the Palmetto departure at 5 p.m. on Thursday, February 20.

During the track work, the revised schedule for the southbound Silver Meteor, train 97, will be in effect four days a week. When operating on the revised schedule, train 97 will depart from stops between Florence, S.C. and Savannah, Ga. 30 minutes earlier than scheduled. The train will not make stops in Kingstree or Yemassee, S.C. on those days. Train 97 departures from points north of Florence and south of Savannah will continue to adhere to the regular schedule throughout the period of track work. Train 97 departures from New York will operate on the revised schedule on the following days:

January 15
January 19 through January 22
January 26 through January 29
February 2 through February 5
February 9 through February 12
February 16 through February 19
Train 97 will operate on its regular schedule on the days not listed above.
