Subdivision Overview
The Lyndyll Sub is one of the most unheralded subdivisions in the western US. As a subdivision of the UP's LA&SL line, it is part of a vital link between southern California and the eastern US. Trains traveling through the central portions of Utah are met with wide flat plateaus and high desert scenery. This wonderful backdrop in which to watch the action remains largely unexplored, at least as far as what is available online is concerned.
With favorable access to the line, much of it running beside well paved roads, this sub provides the railfan a choice of beautiful scenery and rustic old Americana as it passes through the sparsely populated towns of Utah's farming belt. The north / south orientation of the line favors the westbound trains more, but locations are available to get a good eastbound shot or two as well, especially in the high sun summer months (early in the morning that is)
Access: As mentioned above, much of the sub lies beside or near paved routes that traverse the center of the state. From Milford north to just south of Delta the line is never more than a few hundred yards away. While the areas are not that heavily traveled they are good roads and have nice wide shoulders to work off of. North of Delta the tracks meander a bit more and appear less frequently than in the southern reaches. Some nice shots can be had by doing a little off roading. Even with the tracks away from the road a bit, they are never more than 4 miles away from pavement and are always within reach of the dirt roads criss-crossing the landscape.
Lodging: This is a bit limited for much of the sub. Milford has very little, as does Delta, though Delta does have a Best Western in it, the only national chain I could find., not in Salt Lake or Tooele. Once north toward Tooele and Salt Lake, you'll find more of what most railfans are looking for.
Food and supplies: There are several locations along the route to find gas and a snack. Between Milford and Salt Lake, the only stops with any kind of national fast food would be in Delta - a McDs. Tooele has most everything. Gas can be found in Milford, Delta, Lyndyll, Tooele, and Salt Lake City.
Seasons: Mild summers and cold winters are to be expected. Generally pleasant weather from Late March through early September. You shouldn't see any really hot weather either, though it can (and probably will) top the century mark at least a bit during the summer, especially along the southern reaches of the sub.
