Message:
Sacramento Capitol Corridor Commuters
You may be aware that Union Pacific Railroad is continuing its efforts to move the passenger tracks away from the historic SP Station, making their toxic-free 37 acres directly accessible to the city and build another station facility two blocks north.
Our grass-roots organization Save the Depot Coalition is working to to maintain the historic station as The Station, and build a future for intermodal transportation from this very significant structure for rail, light rail, bus, taxi and bicylcles, and for the accessible pedestrian connection to the downtown business center and tourism.
If you are interested in joining our efforts, and/or writing letters to local politicians and/or rail officials, contact Greg Taylor at gt@toposarc.com.
This is your rail future.
Thank you.

Message:
Hello!

I'm Vice Chmn of the CT Metro-North Rail Commuter Council. We are working on getting our riders better on time performance.

Metro-North defines "on time" as within 6 min. of advertised times... and says this is an "industry standard".

Do you know if this is true? What do your local commuter and freight railroads define "on time" as being?

Thanks!

commuting from San Jose to Berkeley - August 23, 1999

Message:
Hi,

I received a pointer to this commuting option
from an internal bulleting board. My wife
needs to commute to Berkeley (from San Jose)
about two or three times a week. Some of the
days she needs to be there by 9:00am and
some of the days around 11:00am or late
afternoon 2pm.

I believe train is the best commuting option.
What I would like to know is

a. How often are the trains? and how reliable
to schedule they are?

b. What are the fares?

Please let me know,

Huzefa

I trust someone told the "Estelle's coat story." (smile) Does this mean Bobby is truely in retired? Miss all of you!!

Those of you who are attending the party to the un-officio "Mayor of Amtrak" Bobby Brar, (who was closed to getting a life time pass from Amtrak) on Thursday July 29th on Amtrak 728, going back home, please bring a funny story involving Bobby that you remember. We are going to toast and roast him that day.
If you do not know, Bobby retired suddenly about two weeks back. He is enjoying his life. And still does not know how to lessen the heavy weight in his pockets.

Hi, commuters. I'm the guy who used to commute with you a couple of times a week and who wrote the computer article last year. For those of you following our progress, wanted you to know that Jane won't be receiving chemotherapy right away because her blood counts are too low. (Might be a side effect of current medication, so we're changing that.) She continues to feel good and do well. As for me, Rebecca's Garden magazine, which I worked for in SF, is moving to NY and I won't be moving with it. I may see you on the train over the next few months, once or twice a month, as we close up the SF office. Also, wanted to tell everyone that I ran into Collette yesterday and it sounds like she'll be returning to your ranks soon. (But I'll let her tell that story.) Best wishes, Fred.

Dear RailPAC member:

Well, here it is, Our 1st E-mail newsletter!
RailPAC has been growing and expanding and now, in order to keep our members better informed, we are establishing an E-mail newsletter.
From time to time you will be informed of various activities and new of
RailPAC. Here goes with issue Number 1.

RailPAC E-Letter
Vol. I Number I February 1999
http://www.trainweb.com/railpac/
RicSilver@aol.com

New Web Site: As you can see by the Web address above, our Web Page is up and running again. Our new Web Master Matthew Meltzer of Woodland Hills, has jumped in to update it and handle any changes. Please take a minute to look at it and let him know what you think.
Regional Meetings: As you may be aware, RailPAC has embarked on a program of regional meeting throughout the state. About every other month we will hold a regional meeting that will include a speaker or two, information about what RailPAC has been doing, and also, an opportunity for members to let the officers know what they feel is important.
So far there has been a meeting in Oakland (Nov.) and Fullerton (Jan). Coming up will be meetings in Santa Barbara (Subject, Coast rail service and San Diegean Service) and Fresno (San Joaquin Service and High Speed Rail). Notice of future meeting will be posted on the Web page and set to you via E-mail and/or snail mail.
If you live in the Santa Barbara or Fresno area and would like to help with the meetings, or know people who we should invite, please send me an e-mail RicSilver@aol.com and let me know. Or you may call me at 650-368-7112.
Newsletter: Our newsletter editor, Russ Jackson, has moved to Vacaville. But this should have no effect on duties. If you have ideas for the newsletter, or want to write something that is timely, you can E-mail Russ at Editoruss@aol.com Also, it you come across something in your local newspaper that you think should be included in the newsletter, or in this online newsletter, feel free to E-mail Russ or me at out E-mail addresses.
Survey: All of you, as members of RailPAC, were recently sent a survey about your interest in Rail Service and issues. While most of you filled it out and returned it there is still some that we haven't heard from. Please take a minute and fill it out and send it to us. The information is important so as to give the RailPAC board some idea of what the members are interested in and what direction we should be going.
Local Rail Issues: Is there a local rail issue that you've been following and that RailPAC should get involved in? Please send us some information on it. Remember, if it runs on tracks then RailPAC is interested.
Membership: Our membership has really jumped in the last year. We are averaging more than 50 new members a month. But the best way to get new members is through word of mouth and referral. If you know someone that might be interest in RailPAC, please e-mail me their address and I will send them information. Remember RailPAC now includes Nevada since our recent merger with the Nevada Association of Rail Passengers last year.
Joint Efforts and Alliances: Beside the merger with Nevada ARP, RailPac has established several alliances with other Rail groups and publications. Flimsies and California Corridors are two of the top rail and transit publication in California. We have exchange mailing lists and are promoting each others services to our members. If you would like information about either publication e-mail me and let me know.
NARP Regional Meeting: The National Association of Rail Passengers, the only real NATIONAL rail advocacy group, will hold its annual regional meeting in Riverside on Saturday, March 20. If you would like info about the meeting, or info about NARP e-mail and I will be happy to send it to you.
Finally, and perhaps most important, Please take a minute and let me know that you in fact got this "E-letter" and wether or not you wish to receive notice via E-mail in the future.
____ Yes, I received the E-Letter and would like to be keep on the list to receive future editions along with other important news alerts.
____ STOP! I received the E-Letter but I would not like to receive any more in the future.
Any other comments?:

Hi. I'm still in northern New Hampshire working as lead environmental
inspector on a 70 mile spread of pipeline (my section is from Quebec to Maine). I've got 5 great inspectors working for me through the toughest rock, wetlands, and regulators I've ever encountered. My wife and little boy are here and we've rented a farm house in Stark, NH - a cute little village with a covered bridge (my son's school is K-6 and has 67 students). So far only mild weather (about 35 degrees today) and little snow, but everyone warns us it will eventually get worse. I don't miss the commute, but here's it's 6 days/week, 12 hours/day, plus I work about 2 Sunday out of 3 - construction is 7 days per week. I'll probably be here until spring to
oversee restoration and repair work. Say hi to everyone for me and sooner or later I'll show-up on the train again. - Roy

This morning I received an update on Jane's surgery from Fred Sandsmark and since it is lengthy, I will only hit the highlights here. I have printed out the message in full and will be in the first car on tonight's train should anyone wish to read it in its entirety. Jane was able to celebrate Thanksgiving at home with "a houseful of people." As Fred said, "She's TOUGH!" The most recent pathology confirms that it is an Anaplastic Astrocytoma Grade III (IV is the most malignant). Chemo comes next and then occupational therapy so she can "learn to work with the effects." Fred included his address (1411 Valley Glen Drive, Roseville 95747)in case anyone would like to get in touch with them. His friend Connie said "If our brains were simple enough to understand, we'd be too simple to understand them." Amen.

On 10/28 I received an e-mail from fellow-commuter Fred Sandsmark updating the progress being made to treat his wife's brain cancer. Jane is currently resting from the medical treatment Jane has been undertaking in San Francisco and once the new MRI has een analyzed, Jane may undergo more chemo and/or surgery. Happily, they've won their battle with the insurance company concerning the cost, thanks in part to HP employees in Roseville. Fred expressed their thanks for people's well wishes, "drumming, wha ever works" and said contact with friends would be welcomed as he and Jane face some tough risk/benefit decisions in the very near future. They are quite optimistic that further surgery will not infringe upon Jane's language abilities. Fred's e-mail is red@marblepub.com, should you wish to say "hi," "keep the faith," "hang in there, baby," or whatever.

Some of you may remember the night the fire swept across the train tracks and the fire department stop the train about .5 miles from Sacramento. We found ourselves utterly stuck between Davis and Sacramento. It was John's foresight that save the night. He circled the bus around and picked up all of us for the ride to Sacramento. We will have a card for John on Friday, Oct ber 23, 1998. Please sign the card and bring a photo or something to remind John of all his friends on the Capitol Corridor.

Hello my fellow Americans, I am back on line after a disastrous crash of my computer. It was difficult to reconnect. Some of you maybe unaware that if you click on my name in meet the conductors you will get my e-mail address. As far as my health it is a long proccess, so I am told by the medical field. I just want to say that I miss all of you. Your present conductor, Bob Whittle, is a very interesting person whom I have known for a number of years. Bob at one time in the 60's had a boat in the Oakl nd harbor that he lived on that had a swing in the middle of the inside room. He later sold it and bought a submarine that was also in the Oakland harbor. Bob and I later worked on the Starlite to Santa Barbara for a regrettably short time.

Fred, as you all may know, wrote that great article in CCN about commuters who utilize their computers on AMTRAK. I appreciate Mr. Fleisher conducting a workshop on the 726 last night, but don't think our opinions will be considered seriously (at least for those of us who are in favor of Option A). I have asked his assistant to send us copies of questions and responses from previous workshops held in Auburn, Sacramento, Oakland, and San Jose. I encourage you to document your opinions in letters to the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority, P.O. Box 12688 (LMA-2). Letters should be copied to individual Joint Powers Board representatives in Placer County, Sacramento Regional Transit District, Solano Transportation Authority, and Yolo County Transportation District. Sounds like lots going on with the train gang; what happened to Manny? Sorry to Darlene and Marti that I've been slow on the travel reports: I'm in Costa Rica (airport project) - green and wet, but may be on the train at least once next week in-between rips. I guess I've got to show-up in the office once in awhile (my 90-day 10 ride pass is running-out with only 4 rides on it). I took the train from Cusco to Machu Picchu (Peru) last week; at least we don't get off the communter train seasick. That's a great place to visit if you ever get the chance.
