General Description
The C&N Division extended between
its namesake cities as a joint division between the Baltimore &
Ohio Railroad and the Pennsylvania Railroad, an arrangement which began
in the 1860's and lasted well into the Conrail era. PRR home
rails on the Panhandle Division
ended at Milepost 157.6 west of Pittsburgh (1st St., Newark, OH).
Panhandle Division administrative control extended west over the
joint rails to Milepost 183.6, Port Columbus - the westernmost limit of
the Central Region. Columbus Division administrative control
extended from here to Columbus Union Station at the western end of the
C&N Division, another 7 miles. The B&O maintained the
physical plant and issued timetables covering the division; PRR signal
rules, however, were in effect.
