After a brief hiatus, Norfolk Southern locomotives began showing up on traffic north of Hagerstown, MD over the weekend. All trains including TV-211, 212, 213, 214, ALNS/NSAL, NSSE/SENS have been operating with NS units trailing since Saturday. Rep orts are that some of the NS locomotives are equipped with toilets. -Kevin Burkholder
Conrail RAI-101 has been busy dropping new 136 RE rail along #1 track (north track) for a major rehab project. The CTC project is not under way on the Harrisburg Line, but is scheduled to begin by summer and last through early next year. This proje ct was postponed last summer after the NS and CSX made offers and eventually purchased Conrail. -Kevin Burkholder
NORFOLK, VA -- Norfolk Southern Corporation (NYSE: NSC) launched its latest television spot this week with national debuts on the CNN, CNBC, MSNBC, Fox News and Headline News cable networks.

Combining live-action segments with computer-generated special effects, "Mission Control" features a Norfolk Southern locomotive being readied for departure in much the same way a spacecraft is prepared for take-off and notes that "perhaps the most rem arkable feature of this system of tomorrow... is that it's here today."

J. Walter Thompson USA advertising agency of Atlanta produced the 30-second spot, which was filmed on location at the railroad's Shaffers Crossing facility in Roanoke, Va., and on a set in Hollywood, Ca. The spot was directed by Mikael Salomon of Flyin g Tiger Films, Santa Monica, Ca., whose film credits include "Backdraft," "The Abyss" and "Far & Away." Miller/Wishengrad/Peacock of Hollywood edited the spot and R/Greenberg Associates of New York created the visual effects.

"Mission Control" is Norfolk Southern's fifth television spot outlining the benefits of safe and efficient rail service for customers, industrial developers and investors. Norfolk Southern's 1997 spot, "Point of View," continues to air, reminding viewe rs of the "spirit of competition" that keeps America's economy moving. -Norfolk Southern


New York Susquehanna & Western is getting some new power in the form of GE and MLW. GECX B23 Super 7 2000 has arrived and is leased to the NYS&W for an undetermined period of time. A 6-axle former CP MLW C-636 is also scheduled to begin ser vice shortly on the NYS&W. It is expected that this unit will be assigned to unit stone train service between Janesville, NY and Binghamton, NY. -Sam Botts
