Frequently Asked Questions

  • How much experience do I need?
None. You just want to have some fun with model railroading.  Everyone new to our hobby or to N scale is welcome, as our members have a variety of skill levels.  Some members have a special expertise and instruct at our clinics or present at our monthly club or N SIG meetings.  We work together on our module building and encourage all members to construct an NTrak or oNeTrak module with assistance available from other members as needed.

  • Do I need to have a module or equipment to join?
No.  You are welcome to join whether or not you have a module or model trains.  You may want to join and participate for a while before committing to N scale.  Or you can simply to enjoy our fellow N SIG members in "The World's Greatest Hobby".

  • What is N SIG?
N SIG stands for N Scale Special Interest Group.  Our group members have an interest in N Scale model railroading.

  • May I attend a meeting or two without being required to join?
Yes.  You are welcome to visit us without cost or obligation for two meetings annually.  To join us, you will be required to first join our club, the E.M.M.R.A., of which the N SIG is part.

  • Do I have to attend all meetings?
No. Attendance at meetings is not mandatory, although we certainly encourage attendance.  We get together to talk about our hobby, to run our trains on NTrak or oNeTrak modules at the shows we attend. To view our show schedule, please refer to the "programme" page.

  • What are NTrak and oNeTrak?
Some members have home layouts, but space is usually at a premium.  NTrak and oNeTrak is based on a concept of 2 ft x 4 ft (NTrak) or 1 ft x 2ft (oNeTrak) modules that can be inter-connected for the purpose of assembling a large layout.  At shows, our 'layout' can be as big as 28 ft x 32 ft, consisting of approximately 20-30 modules.  It allows us to run some very long trains, something not possible on smaller home layouts.
