RAIL-ROAD MOTOR COACH The very first rail-road motor coach designed and built in Australia for the requirements of the N.S.W. Railways arrived at Peterborough from the maker's workshops, Cavan, Adelaide,South Australia, on Wednesday, 26th March. The coach was enroute to New South Wales, where it will be tested under operating conditions. On the afternoon of the 261h,demonstrations and tests were conducted just outside of Peterborough, when the vehicle was tested for the first time on several miles of track. Everything went to plan. The following day the coach was again put on standard gauge track in a matter of minutes, and after inspection by Standardisation and S.A.R. officials, it journeyed to Mingary, where it was put to the motor road again for Broken Hill and from there flat-top rail to Sydney. DETAILS: 90 h.p. Leyland diesel motor. Fuel: 10 miles per gallon; 700 mile range fuel tank. Twenty-three seater. Two-three tons of goods can be stored at rear. Overall weight: II tons 4 cwt. Tyre pressures: 75 lb. front, 80 lb. back, 70 Ib. jockey stabiliser. Both rear tandem wheels provide traction. Valued at $40,000, the unit is 26'8" long. Outside it is finished in aluminium with blue and off-white trim. Inside a pleasing colour scheme, heat-resistant glass, adjustable armchair type seats and jet-air ventilation are features which will provide comfortable travelling conditions for passengers.
