CATCHPOINT N0 107 May 1995 by Kim Bird Designed and built entirely by the South Australian Railways , at its Islington Workshops, the Redhen railcars were responsible for the eventual withdrawal of steam hauled Adelaide suburban passenger services. The SAR originally built a combined total of 74/300 class (single ended) and 37/400 class (double ended) railcars at Islington Workshops, between the years 1955 and 1971. Trans Adelaide has handed over Redhen railcar No.412 to the History Trust of SA, which in turn placed the vehicle on loan to the Australian Railway Historical Society. Ex Redhen 820 class trailer car No.824 has also been transferred to The ARHS (SA), and subsequently relocated to the Victor line. Car 412 was run to SteamRanger's depot at Dry Creek on Tuesday 28/3. Following the necessary approval, car 412 operated the last passenger train movement to Victor Harbor on Sunday 2 April. On Friday 31 March, a total of 8 Redhen railcars were sent for scrapping by Simsmetal at Port Adelaide. Cars; 318, 362, 363, 403, 411, 419, 420, 427 were despatched, in two separate movements both hauled by railcars 400/405 and 372/373 at either end, from Adelaide station to Port Adelaide. Trans Adelaide has also called tenders for the purchase and disposal of the following Redhen railcars; 421, 424, 369, 311, 366, 402,and 416. The latter four railcars are in operable condition, and may be keenly sought after by broad gauge private operators. Thanks to Kim Bird and Catch Point Magazine
