WHAT IS STEAMTOWN Formed in 1977, Steamtown is an operating museum endeavouring to maintain a working link with Peterborough's Narrow Gauge Railway Heritage. Steamtown's collection includes four steam locomotives, one W901 on active duty and seventeen items of passenger stock as well as numerous narrow guage freight vehicles. The society maintains the sole remaining triple guage turn table and round house in Australia, now cornerstone of the societies' restoration program, as well as the longest section of regularly used preserved 1067 mm guage track in the state. All services provided by Steamtown are staffed by volunteers. Our mixed goods trains give passengers the opportunity to witness first hand traditional narrow guage operations in the spirit of the Quorn Mixed. Enjoy a sentimental journey as you steam through the wide expanses of the pastoral country from Peterborough to Orroroo and Eurelia. Reflect upon the atmosphere of former decades, relax in the comfort of ex-Trans coaches and thrill with the excitement of locomotives in an area rich in rail heritaqe. Steamtown Peterborough is a comprehensive tribute to the wealth of railway history this rural setting provides. Step aboard a train departing Peterborough for a 5.1/2 hour return trip to Orroroo or a 7.1/2 hour return excursion to Eurelia, once a refreshment stop for Australian soldiers in World War II. Both rides feature a special stop on Black Rock Bridge, the longest on the former South Australian Railways narrow gauge lines. Also of interest is the heritage listed Peterborough roundhouse, the only triple gauge complex in Australia.
