The Lindsay, Bobcaygeon & Pontypool Railway

Location: The subject railway is located in central Ontario, extending between the former CPR mainline near Burketon north of Oshawa, and Bobcaygeon in the Kawartha Lake area.

History: The Lindsay, Bobcaygeon & Pontypool Railway was incorporated in March 1890 by leading citizens of the Bobcaygeon and Kawartha area with a view of expanding year round trade in the region in conjunction with the existing steamer navigation routes, and to provide for a connection to the outside railway world for passengers and freight. In order to accomplish this, the owners sought to construct a forty mile line south through Lindsay to a connection with the Ontario & Quebec Railway (controlled by the Canadian Pacific Railway) at or near Pontypool. All levels of government were canvassed for their willingness to provide subsidies in support of construction for the line, however, these did not immediately follow and the charter remained dormant. Renewed interest by those willing to provide financial support took place near the end of the decade. As a result, surveys were commenced in June 1900 on the proposed route. Shortly thereafter, construction crews began grading of the line in a leisurely fashion, itself not being completed until April 1904. The railway was finally opened for revenue traffic in August of that same year. In September, the directors of the company entered into a leasing arrangement with the CPR for a period of 99 years. Additional powers to expand the line north to connect with the Irondale, Bancroft & Ottawa Railway never materialized. The corporate name disappeared as a separate entity in 1956.

Approximate Milage: 39 miles.

Current Status: Under the Canadian Pacific, the line became known as the Lindsay Subdivision. The route has been abandoned in its entirety in the following manner: Burketon to Lindsay Jct. 1933, Lindsay to Bobcaygeon 1961, and that portion located within the community of Lindsay by 1990.

Principle Stations: Burketon, Lindsay and Bobcaygeon.

Remaining Stations: There are three stations remaining along the former route of the Lindsay, Bobcaygeon & Pontypool Railway. They are as follows:
1. Dunsford: Moved to property south of community off Highway #36 at Emily Creek as a private residence.
2. Kenstone: In original location as a private residence on Kenstone Road (may have been destroyed).
3. Nestleton Station: In original location as a private residence on west side of Nestleton Road north of community.
