Chester Area

By following Rt-20 west from CP-123 you enter the Town of Chester, Ma. Chester was once a helper location back in the days of steam and through the years that the NYC operated here and for a short period when CR came on the seen.

Today the Roundhouse and Coaling Tower still stand just north of Chester Yard and the old train depot. The station use to be located on the southside of the tracks in the Chester business district. A few years ago it was moved on to the northside and is occupy by a local rail group. The roundhouse and coal tower are off-limits because these structures are privately owned.

Once a year the town celebrates "Chester Days" or "Chester-On-Track". CR provides a unit for people to look at and take a tour inside. The past couple years this has been a SD80MAC. Tours are given to different locations around the Chester area including the stone arch bridges located between the towns of Chester and Middlefield along Conrail's mainline.

Location #1

Along Rt-20, across from a fuel oil dealer make a right on to Bay State Rd, cross the tracks over a bridge and drive north. There are a couple locations where E/B's can be caught by driving off to the left. A huge factory used to be in this location until fire struck and the complex burned down. All thats left is the concrete slab and foundation

Lighting is best for E/B's in the early morning as the sun slowly climbs over the mountain to the east.
