Western Maryland purchased 21 GP-9s between May 1954 and June 1957. These engines were delivered in the black and gold paint scheme and over time 9 units were repainted to the red, white, and black scheme. All units had their short hood chopped down for better visibility. Originally numbered 25 to 45 these engines were renumbered as 6400 to 6420 in the Chessie era.
