In September 2000, Fort Worth residents were treated to the sights and sounds of an operating steam locomotive on local shortline Fort Worth & Western. Former Southern Pacific 2-6-0 locomotive 1744, re-lettered for the New Orleans & Gulf Coast, had recently undergone restoration by the Rio Grande Pacific Corporation at FWWR's 8th Avenue Yard in Fort Worth.

Prior to its shipment to New Orleans, where the locomotive operated on New Orleans & Gulf Coast's Big Easy Steam Train, the locomotive made several break-in runs on the FWWR, including a charter trip for the joint BRHS/RITS (Burlington Route Historical Society / Rock Island Technical Society) Convention between the Fort Worth Stockyards and 8th Avenue on September 21.
