The Pioneer Zephyr Comes Home / 18th St., Chicago, Illinois Hot Spot

In 1934, the Burlington Route's Pioneer Zephyr represented the state-of-the-art, cutting edge technology in railroading. On May 26, 1934 the Zephyr made a record-breaking run between Denver, Colorado and Chicago, covering the distance in13 hours, 4 minutes, and 56 seconds. The average speed on the run was 77.61 miles per hour with a top speed of 112.5 miles per hour, attained between Yuma and Schramm, Colorado.

In the 1960's this train was retired and donated by the CB&Q to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. For years it resided on display as one of the museum's outdoor exhibits, next to Santa Fe 2903 and the German submarine U-505.

The Zephyr carried road number 9900. This train is famous for running non-stop between in just over 13 hours between Denver, Colorado and Chicago in 1934.

Our story begins at the W.W. Grainger facility in Skokie, Illinois. Here the Zephyr was open to the public before being transported to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.

Donated to the Museum in 1960, the Zephyr was displayed outside next to Santa Fe 2903 until 1994.

In 1998, the cosmetically restored train was lowered into it new home inside of the underground parking garage in front of the Museum.

The operation commences. The Zephyr's power car is swung out over the hole in the still-under-construction parking garage.

The Pioneer Zephyr's power car hovers above the opening as camera blaze away.

Almost all the way down, the lead truck is rolled underneath the suspended power car.

Mission accomplished as the 9900 rest on the lead truck. Cribbing is supporting the rear of the car.

This inbound train from St.Louis and Springfield is just about to pass under 18th St. and will soon reach Chicago Union Station.
