From the downtown area of the Mile High City to the Continental Divide, there is a lot of interesting railroading from Denver heading west. This travelogue looks at the variety found in the area.

For the first time since World War II blackouts, Denver Union Station was illuminated by Christmas lights. The station sits in the Lower Downtown (LoDo) section of the city about three blocks from Coors Field (12/2/98).

The California Zephyr behind Amtrak Dash 9-P42B 25 pauses at Denver Union Station (12/2/98).

A few days later the Zephyr was almost two hours late. The train arrived with Union Pacific SD40T-2 4472 on the point, which was replaced by Amtrak Dash 9-P42B 59 at Denver (12/6/98).

A favorite railfanning spot on the Joint Line has been the Gates Rubber Plant south of downtown. New signalling and fences, as well as the new light rail system, have changed this area tremendously in recent years. BNSF Dash 9-44CW 4734 leads a southbound train through the interlocking (12/7/98).
