Railroads of Draper


The following is a list of the railroads that have served Draper thru the years. It does not include the old D&RGW line on the west side of town as that station name was Riverton.

December 1871
The Utah Southern RR tracks reached Draper. This became the southern terminal for the winter of 1871/1872.

August 7, 1872
The tracks were completed to the Point of the Mountain.
Note: The Union Pacific was the major bond holder for the Utah Southern.

September 23, 1872
The Utah Southern RR began operating passanger trains between SLC and Lehi.

September 25, 1872
The Utah Southern RR began operating freight trains between SLC and Lehi.

June 1875
Union Pacific officers purchased controlling interest of the Utah Southern RR.

July 1881
The Utah Southern RR merged with the Utah Central RR and the Utah Southern RR Extention to form a new Utah Central RY.

July 27, 1889
The Oregon Short Line & Utah Northern RY is organized by merging the Utah & Northern RY, the Utah Central RY, the Utah & Nevada RY the Salt Lake & Western RY and the Ogden & Syracuse RY (all in Utah), the Oregon Short Line RY and Idaho Central RY (both in Idaho), and the unbuilt Nevada Pacific RY in Nevada.

October 13, 1893
The bondholders and the fedral government forced UP into receivership.

Spring 1895
A seperate receiver is named for the OSL&UN.

February 23, 1897
The property of the old OSL&UN RY was sold to the new OSL RR, incorperated on February 1, 1897.

July 7, 1903
The Los Angeles and Salt Lake RR purchaced all OSL lines south of Salt Lake City.

December 31, 1987
The LA&SL RR is merged into the UP.

April 1993
The Salt Lake City Southern came into being in April, 1993. It was created when Union Pacific sold to the Utah Transit Authority a portion of its track stretching from the Utah/Salt Lake County line, UP mile post 775.74, to 900 South mile post 798.74 at 900 South Street in downtown Salt Lake City. It also includes the 1.25 mile Loverdahl Spur, connecting at mile post 790.52. Union Pacific, however, retained rights to haul freight over the track and subsequently sold those rights to Railtex.

The Salt Lake City Southern interchanges with UP and provides terminal and intra-plant switching for approximately fifty customers ranging from downtown Salt Lake City to Draper in the south. The active line ends at the IFA plant in Draper.

October 1999
RailTex completed the sale of the Salt Lake City Southern to the Utah Railway Company, the Martin based rail carrier, which throughout most of its 86-year history has concentrated on hauling coal between Martin and Provo.
