Sturtevant, Wisconsin Milwaukee Road Derailment February 1, 1984 Train number 202 derailed at 9:45 PM on the night of February 1st 1984 in Sturtevant, Wisconsin. The train consisted of locomotives 2029, 2066 and 2065. The train had one hundred cars and caboose, 992214. About 23 cars derailed due to a wheel bearing burning off from a axle on a gondola loaded with scrap metal that was picked up in Milwaukee, WI earlier that day. The windows of the Sturtevant depot and the windshields of parked cars in the depot's parking lot were broken as the derailed freight cars kicked up ballast and sent it flying everywhere. Sparks and screeching came from several boxcars as they skidded across Hy 11. The first railroad emergency crews that showed up was the Pettibone mobile crane which cleared Hy 11. Hulcher Emergency Services arrived with four caterpillar side booms and their support units and twelve hours after their arrival, trains were able to pass thru the area. The following Photo's were taking by Michael Bingen. Michael saw the derailment happen before his eye's. Select images below to enlarge.
