Long Island Asylum Spurs
Home to Long Island, were 4 Insane Asylums. These asylums held Long Islands mentally ill patients. These patients came from all over Nassau and Suffolk County. The Psychiatric Centers were Central Islip, Pilgrim State, Kings Park Psyc. and Edgewood. Each center was almost self relient with patients working farms in the early days. Each center comprised of many, many buildings to house the patients, kitchens, recreational halls and power plants. All 4 of these hospitals had there own spurs, and received deleveries of Coal and other supplies, and also the sunday passenger trains. These trains comprised of usually 8 to 10 hoppers. The passenger trains were mostly 3-5 cars, depending on which hospital, and they had there own platforms. Each of these spurs had changes made over time, Execpt Edgewood and Pilgrim were relativly unchanged. Kings park was the oldest, being built in 1896.
