3486/Chesapeake & Ohio C-630's

After nearly twenty years, the great Chesapeake & Ohio finally placed an order with Alco. They decided to sample four Century 630s which at the time were being built with Hi-Ad trucks. These locomotives were rarely photographed on their short duty for the Chessie, being sold to MK for rebuilding after seeing only six years of service in the states. Even though they have been rebuilt with “pilbara cabs” and GE hoods, everything below the frame still survives and sees service on the the Robe River mining railroad in Australia.

Notes

When the units were rebuilt at MK, the generator compartment shutters on the aftercooler assembly were moved up over the former position of the aftercooler shutters, and in the case of 9417, the radiator shutters (these are on the roof) were widened.
Then when on the Robe River, an air conditioning box was added on the top of the front right battery box, as well as the characteristic Australian sunshades on the windshield. However, no shades were installed over the brakeman's door.
The CM40-8s rebuilds have GE FDL-16 engines rated at 4,200 h.p., GE GMG187 Alternators, and weigh 429,900 lbs. The odd crew cab is Goninan's version of the “pilbara cab”. Most things below the frame have not been rebuilt.
