s.o.21288

o.n.3486

c.n.

This order was C&O's last placed with ALCO; intended as a comparison to see what ‘the other builder’ had to offer.
This quartet was rarely photographed on their short duty for the Chessie, being sold after just six years to Morrison-Knutson. While at Boise, the aftercooler systems were rebuilt and on some units the radiators were enlarged, for new owner Cliff's Robe River Iron Associates in Western Australia. The locos were then shipped to L.A., and then to Port Hedland. Robe quietly operated the 630's with their other ALCOs for about 15 years, until it was decided to rebuild most as CM40-8s.

The “new” 9420, now a G.E., is complete with a Pilbara cab and Dash-8 hood, but still features the familiar ALCO ladder steps, Hi-Ad trucks, and Century-style fuel tank.

  1. Unit was involved in a “head on collision”. No further details.
  2. Either MKCX or C.R.R.I.A. added air conditioners in front of the engineer's position and sunshades over the windshield.
  3. A. Goninan (Bassendean, W.A., AU), a G.E. licensee, carried out the CM40-8M rebuild process. The ALCO frame used and most everything under it is retained, while everything above is, well, discarded. A ‘Pilbara cab’ and a Dash-8 hood replace the ALCO components. This batch of rebuilds have an FDL-16 engine rated at 4,200 h.p. coupled to a GMG187 alternator. Weight is about 429,900 lbs.
