City of Los Angeles, 16th Train, 1950
4-4-2 Sleeper - "Palos Verdes"
19 4-4-2 sleepers on UP were ordered by Pullman in 1940 and delivered in 1941 for use on the COLA
and COSF trains (7th and 9th, and 8th and 10th trains, respectively). The "Figueroa" was used in the COLA 7th train and
the "Palos Verdes" was kept as an "extra" car for the COLA 7th and 9th trains. The cars were configured with
4 bedrooms, 4 compartments and 2 drawing rooms for a total of 22 passengers.
These are the Plan 4069F cars. A similar car the "Imperial" class, Plan 4069H, was also built in 1941 for use
on the Overland route. 12 of these cars went to UP. The cars in the two plans appear to very similar on the outside
with the most obvious difference being the "fluted" skirt on "American" and the solid skirt on "Imperial". The
4069H was built in steel and did thus not have the batten strips under and over the windows that the aluminum cars
(4069F) had.
At the break-up of the Pullman company some of the 4069F cars went to SP and C&NW. UP got 14 cars, all of which were
retired in 1960 and 1961.
Two cars from the same plan and lot but from the City of San Francisco, Civic Center and Hunters Point, are
preserved. The Civic Center is at the Millbrae
Historical Society's Railroad Museum. The Hunters Point is undergoing restoration at the
Travel Town in Los Angeles.
COLA 16
The cars in the COLA 16th train were the "Figueroa" and "Palos Verdes" of the 4069F plan.
