City of Los Angeles, 16th Train, 1950
Baggage-Dormitory - 6006
American Car and Foundry (ACF) received an order from UP for 9 Baggage/Dormitory cars in 1941. The
cars were delivered in 1942 and numbered 6000-6008.
To help generate steam for heating the very long City trains of the 60's, five of these cars were rebuilt in 1962
to Boiler-Dormitory cars. The 6006 was part of this group of five and was given number 304 after the rebuild. The car
was renumbered to 209 in 1987, a number it still carries in the UP Historic Fleet. After the rebuild the car had a 6-wheel
truck on the boiler end and a 4-wheel truck on the dormitory end.
A Baggage-Dormitory car numbered 6009 is preserved at Los Angeles Live Steamers museum. Although
very similar in appearance, this car is made by Pullman and thus was delivered with full skirts. There are
some minor differences in the exterior between the two cars.
COLA 16
The car in the COLA 16th train was #6006.
