In 1950, Flyer offered the #35 Brakeman Set, a set of three identical figures of a railroad brakeman.  The brakemen had a hook on the back that allowed the operator to attach them to a car or locomotive,  adding a realistic touch when  switching freight cars.

You can see the brakeman in action in a few of the circa 1950 photos of the large American Flyer layout in the Gilbert Hall of Science.
