Amtrak trains crossing international borders are subject to Customs and Immigration inspections en route. Although time is allotted in Amtrak schedules for these inspections, Customs and Immigration officials may delay trains if necessary for the performance of their duties.
Proof of citizenship and proof of identity are required. For U.S. and Canadian citizens, a passport is strongly recommended. Otherwise, a certified copy of a birth certificate AND current government-issued photo identification is required. Citizens of all other countries require a passport and, in many cases, a visa, obtained prior to arrival at the border. Passengers under 18 not traveling with both parents require a notarized letter from any parent not present giving permission to cross the border. Admission into another country is solely at the discretion of border authorities, and posession of required documentation in no way guarantees entry. When you make your cross-border reservation with either Amtrak or VIA Rail Canada, your date of birth and country of citizenship will be required; this information is provided to border authorities. For further information and to determine what is required for your particular situation, contact the appropriate U.S. or Canadian government offices prior to travel. A brochure containing additional information is also available from Amtrak, and from the Border Crossing page of Amtrak's web site.
