When the Boston & Maine, the New York Central, and the New Haven turned over their long-distance passenger service to Amtrak, a commuter rail carrier was needed to take over the local trips formerly run by those railroads. So the MBTA began running trains, made up at first by the ex-B&M RDCs amd other various types of equipment, and became the new commuter rail operator for the greater Boston area. The current roster includes ancient FP10s waiting to be sold all the way up to the brand-new GP40MCs, plus a wide variety of passenger cars. I will eventually have photos posted along with information about each type of equipment.
