There is not very much to say about MBTA's F40PHs. They are essentially the basic F40, although without dynamic brakes. The first series, from 1000-1013, have standard radiator fans, while 1014-1017 are equipped with Q-fans. One distinguishing feature is the cab-mounted bell, which replaces the warning light between the numberboards. Other typical MBTA details are the rear classification lights, which project from the carbody and can be made with plastic rod, and the front class lights, which are mounted on small lumps on the nose. Those front class lights only appear on certain units, so check a photo of the unit you are modeling. Number 1000 has small plates of the cab sides dedicating the unit to the memory of Henry Hersey, a well-known MBTA railfan. The 1002 is dedicated to Richard Andrews. Like all current MBTA diesels, the F40s have metal grilles over the cab windshields, which are protection from rock-throwing vandals.
Walthers offers an H.O. scale F40PH decorated as MBTA #1004. It does not have dynamic brakes, so it is a correct model of an MBTA unit. All that needs to be done is to add a bell after cutting off the warning light between the numberboards. Custom Finishing makes a bell that needs only to be reduced slightly in size, but in case you cannot locate that part (Custom Finishing products are not as popular as others), any bell by Detail Associates or Details West that has a side mount will work. Also add the rear class lights, made from styrene rod, after shaving off the molded ones.
