FP10

The FP10s were rebuilt from F3s by the Illinois Central's Paducah shops. They were made in two versions: the 1100 series, with head-end power, and the 1150 series which had steam generators. Later the steam generators were replaced with HEP generators. The carbody is very similar to that of the F7, the differences being more details on the roof and no portholes on the sides. These units were in service as late as the late-80s and early-90s, and then they were retired and sat around in storage for a long time. A few were sold away to other railroads: Metro-North F10s 410-415 were bought from the T, and I believe the Cape Cod Railroad has a few. Once when I was vacationing on Cape Cod, a friend and I went to check out a small railroad, I can't recall which one but it might have been the Cape Cod. After looking around the station, we drove back to see the small roundhouse and yard. Sitting there on a siding, in very poor condition, was an MBTA FP10. Most of the FP10s I have seen in the past few years have been sadly in deplorable condition, even those put in storage by the MBTA. It has been a couple years since I last saw one, so I think they are mostly gone now.

Frank Cicero wrote an article about constructing a Metro-North F10 in Railroad Model Craftsman a few years ago (February 1996 I think?), and I am following that article to build my FP10. Cicero states that there are no noticable changes from MBTA to MNCR besides the paint scheme, and I believe him right. Also, Imperial Hobby Productions makes an F10 shell that is also available powered and painted. SMP Industries, the makers of AccuPaint, once sold a similar shell.
