Since 1897, the
Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority has operated
mass transit in Boston under a variety of diferent names.
Four color-coded rapid transit lines run through the
heart of Boston, one of which runs as streetcars once it
emerges from the tunnels. The MBTA also operates a large
bus network and even commuter boats from Boston Harbor. When the big railroads yielded their long-distance operations to Amtrak, they also ceased to operate commuter service. The MBTA took over the New Haven's service to the south and the Boston & Maine's service to the north. |
