F40PH

Amtrak's standard power since the late '70s, the EMD F40PH was also later used by many other railroads as well. Generating 3000 hp each (minus up to 700 for HEP), two F40s could easily handle almost any Amtrak train. However, now that Amtrak has the new P40s and P42s, the F40 is being replaced by the more powerful, more reliable GE units. Some have been sold to other lines, while others have been converted to NPCUs, which are basically cab/baggage cars (hence the nickname "cabbage"). Some are still operating today on less important trains as substitutes for Genesis units. Also, many commuter railroads own similar or identical versions of F40s, so it will still be a familiar face for years to come. Here are some photos of F40s. They were taken by either me or my father.
