This was the terminal point on the old Mobile & Western railroad [image right], built originally as
a private road by the Robert K. Mann Lumber Company circa 1905-1906. After the great hurricane in September of 1906,
the company went bankrupt and their assets were taken over by Union Naval Stores. By 1912, the M&O had purchased
the right-of-way and the tracks, fully rebuilt the line, and operated it as the Dawes Branch of the M&BS. |
In this enlargement of a 1940 aerial photograph of the Dawes area [image left], the location of the
station is believed to be in the site where a warehouse is identified. This building no longer stands as of June,
2003. It was demolished to make way for a subdivision under development. |
Dawes Station [image right] was much like the ones constructed at Prichard and Alabama Port, where the
railroad used available materials and constructed a make-shift building from a 36' box car. |
