Locomotives Of The Bay Shore
|
This image is believed to be a 4-4-0 "American" of the Mobile, Jackson & Kansas City railroad, after it was
purchased from the AT&SF. The MJ&KC was a predecessor to the GM&N. The Bay Shore operated at least two
similar locomotives from 1898 to 1906, when the M&O replaced them with newer, heavier 4-6-0 "Ten Wheelers".

At right is a photograph of M&O road number 169 -- one of a class of locomotives built by the Rogers
Locomotive Company in 1898-9, with 57" drivers, 18x26 cylinders, and weighing 129,000lbs. At least two of this
class -- the 153 and this one, the 169 -- were known to have operated on the Bay Shore. During the month of
January, 1929, the 169 was assigned to handle both freight and passenger duties on the entire line. A typical
daily routine might run as follows:
|
|
- Engine 169 departs Bayou La Batre at 7:00am with passenger train No. 201 handling baggage car 92, and coach
318.
- Train arrives at Mobile at 8:50am, and drops its train at the depot.
- Same crew and engine departs Mobile as freight train No. 212 at 9:15am.
- Crew and engine departs BLB at 1:52pm as freight train No 211.
- Train arrives at Mobile at 3:45pm.
- Same engine and crew picks up the same two passenger cars used on train 201 that morning, then departs Mobile
as train No 202 at 3:50pm.
- Train arrives at BLB at 5:35pm.
- On Tuesdays and Fridays a trip is made to Dawes by the southbound freight No. 212 as trains No. 312 (to Dawes)
and No. 311 (from Dawes) with the same engine and crew. After returning to Mann Junction from Dawes, the train
continues as No. 212 to BLB.
