This section was born in 1914 when the Ravli Junction - Mahim line was opened. Suburban services began in the later half of 1925, with services upto Bandra. Technically, the line between Mumbai CST and Mahim (upto outer Signal) is under the jurisdiction of CR, while the line ahead is under Western Railway. There are about 92 services each in either directions. This includes 3 pairs of services between Belapur and Andheri, and 1 single service from Mumbai CST to Borivali. Majority of the services in this section is run using 9-Car DC EMU rakes of Central Railway. About 3 pairs of services are run using Western Railway 9-Car DC EMU rakes.
This route is very interesting, and has a special charm for railfans. The harbour line runs on the right side of the Western Railway Main line (Down) from Mahim to Bandra. Immediately after Bandra station, the trains enter a flyover, and cross the main lines to run on the left side of the DN Main line! Similarly, the UP trains (i.e., train running towards Mumbai CST), use a flyover to cross the Mumbai CST-Panvel line near Raoli Junction!
All the services in this section are "slow" services, meaning that all trains stop at all stations enroute. The evening service from Mumbai CST to Borivali (called as 20.49 Borivali) is run using a Western Railway rake, and is very popular among traders in the Masjid Bunder Area. The train is so popular that passengers begin grabbing their seats while the rake goes towards CST itself! This train does not have an opposite pairing train. The rake which works "WAD 6" returns as "WBO 1" from Mumbai CST. This is a slow train throughout its journey!
Note: The services on the Mumbai CST-Bandra-Andheri section are disrupted on most sundays due to track maintenance works. It is safer to take a Western Railway Main Line EMU from Bandra/Andheri to Dadar, and then changing over to the Central Railway Main line to reach Mumbai CST.
Update: Some new services have been added on the Harbour Section w.e.f October 02, 2007. I am in the process of obtaining those tables, and once they are here, it would be made available to all my esteemed visitors. Please be patient.
