For more than 200 miles, stretching between Winslow, AZ and Belen, NM, the Gallup Sub provides a marvel of railroading along the BNSF transcon. This sub passes a wide variety of landscape and natural features with huge plateaus and bluffs the main feature. Plenty of trains, good access, and lots of speed will make a trip to the Gallup Sub a wonderful experience.
Gallup, NM, this subs namesake, provides a great location for exploration. I-40 will anchor the access to the sub and supplies and lodging are readily available along the tracks through town. From here you'll be able to choose locations east or west along the line, and plan day trips to explore the sub.
Locations east of Gallup along the sub and are generally easier to access, while those to the west require a little more energy and exploration. A car will, in most locations, allow you to explore with a general ease, while a truck should allow complete access. Many dirt roads lead to several locations and these might be more easily traversed with a truck.
