Subdivision Overview
The Evanston Sub provides one of the west's most spectacular rail lines for viewing and photographing trains. The high plains of Wyoming which eventually give way to the awesome mountains of Utah, all serve to underscore the grandeur of UP's Overland Route. This page will help you find locations and provide information to make your outing along the Evanston Sub the best it can be.
Access: Basically the sub is fairly easy to follow and has access point along much of its route. The best areas are in Utah, but Wyoming offers its share of features including two spectacular tunnels at the highest point along the subdivision. I-80 and I-84 will anchor your exploration and side roads and dirt routes will provide needed access to some of the more noteworthy locations. A 4x4 isn't a necessary requirement to many of the locations, but can help in some instances to gain that needed advantage.
Lodging:
There are limited locations to crash for the night, notably Ogden, Evanston, and
Green River. You find the national motel chains represented here, as well as the
flea bag stops if you are into that. This sub is relatively short, and with the
interstate you can easily get from one end to the other in under 3 hours. You
are never that far away from a place to sleep. Though I haven't checked, it
seems likely that Ft Bridger (halfway between Evanston and Green River) would
have some limited accommodations.
Seasons: Mild summers and very cold, snowy winters are to be expected, especially in Wyoming. Many of the WY areas become inaccessible to anything but a snowmobile. Drifting snow can wreak havoc on the back roads so better plan for a summer visit to WY. Utah however has snow and plowed roads, so a winter visit is definitely a must. Generally pleasant weather from Late March through early September, with a general lack of any really hot weather. It rarely tops the high 90's, throughout the area so enjoy the wonderful weather. Summer T-storms are possible, and can make for some dramatic shots across the wide open plains of Wyoming. For more specific info on the Evanston Sub, see the linked weather sites here.
