Union Pacific's Caliente Subdivision
Milford, UT to Las Vegas, NV
Updated:  02/18/2005

Introduction

Welcome to the Caliente Subdivision! Inside the pages listed below are photos, maps, and descriptive guides to one of UP's most spectacular subdivisions. One of the longer subs around at 242 miles, a majority of this sub lies in southern Nevada, with a smaller portion in the state of Utah. The line passes through desert, washes, forested mountains and high plains. There is never a lack of scenery almost anywhere along the way. Some portions of the sub are exceptional in their beauty though, and deserve a more detailed look. For example the Meadow Valley Wash, between Moapa and Caliente provide some of the greatest scenery in the entire desert southwest. The forested mountains around Crestline are very nice too.
Geographically the line runs north / south, though the railroad runs it as an east / west main, with eastward trains moving north and westward trains heading south. The entire sub lies in the Mountain Time zone, though most of the sub lies in Nevada which is in the Pacific Time Zone. This is important to know because the times you'll hear given for track and time or meets given by the DS on the scanner will be in Mountain Time, while your watch  is probably in Pacific. This can get a little confusing so just remember that times you hear along the Caliente Sub are most likely one hour ahead of your watch. I usually change my watch to read Mountain time while I fan this sub. Less confusing that way. Also remember that the railroad uses a 24 hr clock or Military Time to specify AM / PM.
I have maps and directions that will go into more detail for access to the tracks and locations along this sub. In this instance you are going to not be using the interstate very much as most of the sub lies in the more remote areas of NV and UT. There is good access along paved roads most of the route, but there is plenty of dirt roads to travel as well. A truck is more preferable to go exploring with, so if you are flying into Vegas for instance, rent a 4X4, you'll be glad you did.
