The Carthage & Burlington RR was organized at Carthage, IL, on April 18, 1867 to construct a railroad from East Burlington, IL, southerly to connect with the Quincy & Warsaw RR at Carthage, a distance of 30.4 miles. It was completed on January 16, 1870 and operated by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy by lease until conveyed to them by deed on June 1, 1899.
The Quincy & Warsaw RR was organized at Quincy, IL, on December 17, 1867 to build a railroad from Quincy to Carthage, a distance of 40.6 miles. It was completed and opened for traffic on December 25, 1870 and operated by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy by lease until conveyed to them by deed on June 1, 1899.
In 1967, the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy began abandonment proceedings from East Burlington to Colusa, IL. The abandonment continued down the line until 1979 when Burlington Northern abandoned the final portion from Mendon to Quincy, IL.
On the future model layout, the grain elevator operators banded together in 1967 to form the Carthage, Burlington and Quincy Railroad from the section about to be abandoned. By 1979, we had acquired the remaining portions of the line to Quincy, IL. In addition to transporting grain and other online commodities, we provide a bridge connection for Burlington Northern Santa Fe at Quincy, IL, Lomax, IL, and Burlington, IA. We also interchange with Keokuk Junction Railway at Ferris, IL and Toledo, Peoria and Western at Lomax, IL.
This is the history of the Carthage, Burlington and Quincy Railroad.
