Rochester

The PRR's 'Fort Wayne' main line, ex-Ohio and Pennsylvania, had two main difficulties.  First, it had something of a sawtooth profile west of New Brighton as it negotiated the rolling hills along the Ohio - Pennsylvania border.  Second, it managed to miss most of the major urban areas in Ohio, as it ran a fair distance south of the populous Lake Erie shore.
Consequently, a tangle of main and secondary lines evolved running more or less perpendicular to the Fort Wayne main that functioned as lower-grade freight routes or links to Erie, Cleveland, Youngstown, and other urban areas.  The first major connection point west of Pittsburgh was at Rochester, an industrial town located at the junction of the Ohio and Beaver Rivers.  The Bayard Branch followed the Ohio River to Yellow Creek before turning north towards Fairhope, and provided a low-grade alternative for eastbound bulk freight.  The Low Grade Branch also tied in here, though the split became apparent further up the Beaver River at New Brighton, and provided a freight connection to the Erie and Ashtabula Division on its way to Youngstown.
