The BANBURY WOODS SHORT LINE is a relatively new G scale layout built over the last two years by two older, inexperienced model enthusiasts with Atlantic Coast Line Railroad family ties, who have had loads of fun learning and doing. With 125' feet of LGB track the line is track powered with remote switching for two passing tracks, and encircles a 4000 gallon koi/goldfish pond with a 12' railroad bridge across the pond. Miniature plantings, vehicles, figures and buildings add to the realism. The self wired control panel is located on the deck above the layout and the Train Engineer remote unit provides flexibility. Rolling stock consists of an LGB 2-4-0 Classic Steam Engine (Southern) with sound and classic freight stock plus a USA Trains F3A 1940-50's Diesel Unit (ACL) with more modern freight equipment. Streamlined ACL passenger coaches for the F3-A are in the acquisition process. Ralph builds and maintains the layout and Phyllis enjoys planning and handling the plantings and buildings.

Gary's branch layout of the Norfolk & Western is in a room measuring 14' by 18'. The layout has a double track helix (total of 150 feet of track) at a 2% grade with a total rise of 22-inches. It has 400 feet of additional track for a total of 550 feet. There are 76 turnouts of which 41 are controlled with tortoises. The main features are Coalwood, Ely Thomas Lumber Co. and a walk-under truss bridge. It also has a 5 track fiddle yard, which includes a hand operated swing bridge. The railroad is DCC controlled by NCE and walkaround cabs. Most of the scenery is completed with a combination of plaster over screen wire, hydrocal hardshell, and foamboard techniques. Gary is also populating the railroad with numerous structures including Campbell, BTS, Bar Mills, scratch built and plastic models. |

It's June, 1970, and business is booming. The Penn Central railroad, desperate for a way to bypass the clogged Northeast corridor, has merged it's 97% owned Lehigh Valley into the fold. Among other things, this has resulted in the newly formed Lehigh and Delaware division of the Penn Central Railroad. It's a mix of Penn Central and Lehigh Valley tracks, running Northwest from Philadelphia, PA to Buffalo, NY. Integration is just starting, but several high priority PC trains are already running on ex LV tracks. However, most trains, both PC and LV, are still running as they have in the past. The Central Railroad of New Jersey and the Lehigh and Hudson River still have trackage rights over much of the LV mainline. There is still a fair amount of CNJ traffic.

Dick's layouts (he actually has two) are located in an upstairs and downstairs bonus room built especially for the model railroads. He is primarily depicting The Pennsylvania (and some close relatives) Railroad and a comprehensive interurban and trolley layout. Those of you familiar with Dick know that trolleys are his favorites. His layout is well on the way to being finished and has most of the track installed and wired. There has been some work done on scenery and new structures appear almost daily. The layout is expected to be about 50% complete by the time of the convention with some scenery areas completely detailed for your photographic pleasure. Some parts of the layout(s) will be block control DC and the remainder will be Digitrax DCC. Many of Dick's beautiful trolleys have no easy way to be converted to DCC at this time.

The 20' x 120' HO modular layout is located on the 2nd floor of the Antique Barn & Train Shop in Wilson, NC. The double-track mainline, about 7.6 scale miles long, traverses 65 modules, each individually owned and detailed by club members. There are 2 main yards and one staging yard with a total capacity of 2,000 cars, and an engine servicing facility with a capacity of 60 engines. It is a point-to-point layout operations oriented layout that can be operated by 5 to 16 people. The layout is Digitrax DCC controlled.
