FORT WAYNE LINE DERAILMENT
Train TOPI-0 derailed
22 cars at milepost 36.4 on the Fort Wayne Line (between CP-Wood and CP-Enon)
at 21:17 EST on Friday, March 20th, 1998 blocking both tracks. Train TOPI-0
was powered by C40-8W 6224, SD60M 5549, and SD40-2's 6471 and 6472 and
consisted of 93 loads and 8 empties that totaled 10,883 tons and stretched
9,117 feet. There were no injuries reported. There was some minimal leakage
from 47th head car,
NATX 37826, a empty with
Methyl Alcohol residue along with several cars of molasses also leaking.
The cause of the derailment has not yet been established. Pittsburgh Division
officials estimate that Fort Wayne Line track two will be restored around
noon today, with track one restored between midnight and daybreak on Sunday.
There have been several detours including Amtrak trains due to the derailment.
Hulcher wrecking crews from Washington, PA and Gettysburg, PA and R.J.
Corman wrecking crews from Columbus, OH and Toledo, OH are on the scene.
Involved cars are as follows:
UNIT TRAIN TRAFFIC DRYING UP?
With the impending closure of the Bethlehem Steel Coke furnace on March 31, multiple unit trains on Conrail, St. Lawrence & Hudson, and Norfolk Southern will be abolished. Loaded coal trains symbollized UBB- on Conrail, will be cut severely, potentially abolished all together. These trains operate from various coal fields on the Conrail system and provide Bethlehem Steel with several unit trains monthly. Conrail UBC- unit coke trains, along with St.L&H/NS unit coke train 8857 will also be curtailed. This traffic represents several trains a week on the St.L&H/NS and several a month on Conrail. The impact of the Bethlehem Steel Coke Works closure will have a trickle-down effect that will eventually strike the railroad industry in Eastern Pennsylvania. If the closure at Bethlehem occurs on schedule, the furnaces will be emptied beginning on March 22, concluding by March 31.
In addition to the coke traffic being dissolved, Conrail was notified that the taconite ore traffic that has been handled at Philadelphia-Greenwich Yard will be discontinued. Apparently the reserves from which the taconite was shipped, have been depleted. Both Weirton and Thompson Works are scheduled to receive coal from various docks located on Lake Erie. Thompson Works has been receiving "all-rail" movement of taconite pellets from the DM&IR Iron Range in northern Minnesota. These movements are expected to continue. Recently, there have been numerous "Z**-" trains operated out of Philadelphia. These loads may represent the end of an era for the Philadelphia ore docks. -Kevin Burkholder

Corail 4100-4129 are
GMLG SD80MAC's; several of these units are currently undergoing GMLG-modifications
at Cleveland-Collinwood, OH (source: Conrail Technical Society)
Conrail 4130-4132 are CSX-owned SD70MAC's, constructed by the Conrail Juniata
shops; the 4130 and 4131 have been painted into the Conrail "AC-smiley"
scheme, but have not been placed in service. The 4132 should be entering
the paint booth shortly at Altoona, PA. -special thanks to Willie Brown

1998 -- Adam Hollingsworth has been named resident vice president-state
relations for Florida, announced Michael J. Ruehling, CSX vice president-state
relations. The appointment is
effective immediately.
In his new position, Hollingsworth will be responsible for CSX's legislative and governmental activities in Florida. He will be based in Jacksonville and work closely with T. A native of Jacksonville, Hollingsworth earned a bachelor's degree in communications at the University of Alabama in 1990. He joined CSX Transportation in 1995 as manager-government affairs. Most recently, he was director-government affairs. Prior to joining CSXT, he served on the staffs of former Congressman Charlie Bennett (D-Fla.), Congresswoman Corrine Brown (D-Fla.), and former Jacksonville Mayor Ed Austin (R-Jacksonville).
Hollingsworth serves on the boards of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Jacksonville, the Duval Public Education Foundation and the Youth Crisis Center.-CSX Transportation
Delaware-Lackawanna M636 4743 made its maiden voyage on NYS&W rails on March 20. The six-wheel truck MLW locomotive was the third unit, behind a pair of CP SD40/-2s, on train 268. The MLW was on-line, with its sound being drowned out by the two GMDD locomotive. The 268 passed Sparta Junction at approx. 10:25 a.m.
Delaware-Lackawanna M636 4743 departed on Friday night's SQ-555. It is the second of five units, behind the NYSW F45 3636, and the train is to depart Little Ferry sometime after 10:00 p.m.
The D-L set the #4743 up as a good leader, equipped with radio and head-end telemetry box. The #4743 COULD NOT lead the SQ-555 north last night since it was facing east. The engine came into East Binghamton facing west. BH-1 on thursday went around the east leg of the wye and backed down the Liberty St. Main. The power on #268 was all facing east. The #4743 will be in the lead of BH-1 (SQ-555) when the train returns from Syracuse. They have to pickup the #2012 at Jamesville + cars and more cars at Cortland. -Carl Perelman, Mike Del Vecchio, S.J. Botts
