B23-7R LOCATIONS
These "rare-breed" locomotives
on Conrail were inherited with the acquisition of the Monongahela Railroad
in 1992. These were workhorses for the MGA, hauling coal and operating
in helper service to the end of the MGA existence. The MGA was one
of a hanful of buyers in the Super 7 market. These units are remanufactured
"U-series" locomotives from various other roads. They continue to
soldier on for Conrail, often not far from where they lugged tonnage for
the MGA. -Kevin Burkholder, Willie Brown

Trains 115 and 216 Jacksonville to W. Palm Beach through-freight have been abolished, and 218 out of Ft. Lauderdale will be renumbered 216 with departure at 18:00 ET Mon-Fri and 11:00 ET Sat. They will pick up in W. Palm Beach, in addition to everything else they normally do, replacing the 216. Train 117 will cut off in W. Palm Beach (milepost 299) southbound enroute to Ft. Lauderdale (milepost 344).
A new through-freight is being added out of Ft. Pierce to Jacksonville and return 3 times a week. It will be called 119/220.
A local group took the opportunity of a grade crossing accident at Sunrise Blvd. in Ft. Lauderdale (milepost 339) yesterday between train 218 and a tractor-trailer to announce that they are starting a new South Florida transportation museum. They have announced plans to try and recover ex-FEC 0-8-0 #253 from Texas. They were meeting in the caboose in the Rinker siding at Sunrise Blvd. when the accident occurred. No one hurt, some of the crossing protection was knocked down as the truck was dragged along, no real other damage, except to the truck.
As 208 should passed 218 they then hit and killed a tresspasser in Deerfield Beach (milepost 327) around 1330. -J.L. Hollahan
St. Lawrence & Hudson painted units appear to be another historic feature of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The order had been given that all repaints or new units in the CPR-family were to receive the new "Beaver Logo". This order was to include units from the Soo, D&H, and the St.L&H. The first St. Lawrence & Hudson-assigned unit to receive this treatment is apparently SD40-2 5617. Canadian Pacific Railway-painted SD40-2 5617 arrived in Binghamton on train 556-08 as second unit last night. Engine is in VERY fresh paint. From conversations between yardmaster and diesel shop, it may go back north on the #268 or #555 today. -SJ Botts, Bill Miller, CPR

There are about 10 NS business cars in Augusta, GA this weekend for use during the Masters [golf] Tournament. They came from Roanoke via Linwood and Columbia on last Monday or so as a O44 special. They will likely be returning to Roanoke on the same route sometime around the first of next week. Presently they are sitting on the edge of Augusta, right next to Augusta yard. The train is currently stored on the 4 track section adjacent to the yard where coal hoppers are unloaded. -Chris Seeling
CSX Transportation Inc. (CSXT) announced the appointment of Ed Tucker as the Northeast regional director of industrial development. He will coordinate CSXT's role in the Northeastern states of New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts.
In this role, Tucker will plan and integrate CSXT's industrial development program in the Northeast, focusing primarily on those states where CSXT has not operated to date. CSXT President and Chief Executive Officer A.R. "Pete" Carpenter stated, "Ed will serve as the linchpin for the entire Northeastern region and will bring nearly four decades of experience in economic development to the position."
Creating the position of Northeast regional director of industrial development enables CSXT to evaluate and integrate valuable Conrail resources and personnel to provide streamlined service for communities seeking to generate new jobs and investment through industrial development projects.
Tucker's responsibilities will include evaluating existing resources, creating an aggressive site development program, and introducing CSXT and its industrial development program to local and state economic development officials, members of the business community and potential customers.
CSX Corporation and Norfolk Southern are jointly acquiring Conrail, which will result in increased rail competition in the Northeast and enhanced rail service for many shippers. As part of CSXT's commitment to the region, the company is acting to build industrial development relationships with local communities, businesses and officials. CSXT's industrial development team works closely with shippers and state and local governments to locate new facilities and expand existing properties along its rail system.
Currently, Tucker is a regional director of industrial development for Maryland, the District of Columbia and Pennsylvania. He brings 36 years of experience with CSXT to his new position, 19 years of which have been in industrial development. Tucker will be based in Cranbury, N.J. His new position became effective April 1.
As an additional commitment to the region, CSXT earlier announced the establishment of a new Northeast sales unit to cover the territory that will be allocated to CSXT as part of the Conrail acquisition. Michael P. Ryan assumes the newly-created position of regional sales director-Northeast. He will be responsible for 3,000 rail customers currently served by Conrail.
Through its industrial development program, CSXT has played a key role during the last four years in helping nearly 400 companies locate and expand along its rail lines. Since 1994, CSXT has supported a total of $6.6 billion in industrial development projects, helping to create over 21,000 jobs. -CSX Corporation
