The next pair of SD70MAC's
have been released from Altoona and are heading for Pittsburgh. ATPI-2
departed this morning with 4138 and 4139 in the middle of a consist.
These units "will likely" get the call on the next PINF train. Only
five SD70MAC's remain on the floor at Juniata. Norfolk Southern's
SD70's should begin entering the shops as kits within the next week.
These units will begin emerging in late May with Conrail-blue paint and
road numbers 2557-2580. The SD70's will be constructed similar to
the Norfolk Southern 2500-2556-series already in service. New features
on the Conrail-built units will be cab signals and LSL (Locomotive Speed
Limiter) equipment for operations on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor.
Originally planned for Conrail paint, the units were reportedly going to
emerge in Norfolk Southern paint. Last week, NS advised that since
the SD70MAC order was ahead of schedule, the NS order would be shipped
before the "official" control date. The order was then sent to Altoona
that the units were to be painted Conrail. This SD70-order will represent
the last locomotive purchase for Conrail and also be the last new units
delivered in Conrail paint. -Kevin Burkholder

NEW RAIL MILL FOR WISCONSIN
Governor Tommy Thompson traveled here today to announce that ABC Rail Products Corporation will build a new plant that will employ about 40 in this Lake Superior community, 75 miles east of Superior.
The new plant is one of several being made possible by TIF financing and TEA grants awarded to the city of Ashland by the State of Wisconsin.
Construction of the 57,000 sq.-ft. building will begin in early August with completion in October. Site preparation work is expected to begin in about two weeks.
The plant will assemble track panels, which are sections of rail that allow trains to switch from one track to another. The panels, up to 264 feet long, will be assembled into complete sections and then shipped to railroad customers that will initially include Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Railroad, Wisconsin Central Railroad, and the DM&IR.
Rick Sauer, operations manager for ABC Rail Track Products Division plants in Newton, Kansas, and Superior and Ashland, Wisconsin, said the Ashland plant would replace a similar facility in Duluth, Minnesota, which is being closed.
ABC Rail Products, headquartered in Chicago, operates a network of track product facilities serving railroads across the country. The Ashland plant will receive components for assembly from ABC Rail's plant in Superior and its new rail mill in Chicago Heights, Illinois. There will be no manufacturing planned at the Ashland plant at this time.
Sauer said his company had worked closely with the city of Ashland, the State of Wisconsin, Wisconsin Central Railroad, and other governing bodies in obtaining approvals and financing for the new plant.-ABC Rail Products
