Canadian Pacific Railway tomorrow will begin a detailed defense of its grain transportation performance during the winter of 1996/97. The defense follows several weeks of testimony by the Canadian Wheat Board, which has accused the railway of failing to provide reasonable and adequate grain transportation during that winter.
CPR will defend its performance by proving that the winter in question was of unprecedented severity and that its employees performed heroically and did all they reasonably could under exceedingly difficult circumstances to transport grain and other commodities fairly and equitably.
The railway will lead its testimony with compelling visual evidence of the trials it faced during the winter, supported by testimony from Environment Canada, as well as geo-technical and avalanche experts. The railway will also introduce evidence to show that the weather was a factor in the performance of other railways operating in the Northwest, such as the Burlington Northern Santa Fe, the largest railway in the United States.
In the coming days, the railway will use several expert panels to introduce evidence of the railway's preparations for the winter and the steps taken to deal with the escalating series of weather related blockages and delays that affected the railway for several months. CPR will also demonstrate the complexity of the grain handling system, the multiplicity of players within it and the contributions to the problem by a number of these players during the winter in question.
In addition, CPR will show that the weather affected other industries dependent on rail service and will show how these industries worked with the railway to try to resolve the problems they faced. Testifying for the railway will be Canpotex and Sultran, two major shippers severely affected by weather last winter.
The railway expects that it will take approximately 10 days to complete its testimony.-Canadian Pacific Railway
DISCOVER TRANSIT WEEK
SEPTA will launch "Discover Transit Week" (May 10-16) on Mother's Day by offering mom a free ride on the Broad Street Line and then will continue the week with special events each day. A highlight of the week long celebration will be the first-ever "Car-Free Commuter Wednesday," May 13, as SEPTA discounts transit fares to $1.00 and all regional rail fares to $2.00. In addition, the PHLASH Center City Shuttle will cost only $1.00 on Mother's Day and on May 13.
During "National Discover Transit Week" SEPTA is offering commuters every opportunity to discover just how easy and affordable it is to use SEPTA services, including its regional rail and subway-elevated routes which operate on schedule more than 90% of the time (just think about that next time you are stuck in traffic on the Schuylkill Expressway or I-95).
"At SEPTA we're proud to be part of the National Discover Transit Week campaign and we have an exciting lineup of incentives and events aimed at our current riders and, perhaps more importantly, at getting non-riders to see what's so great about commuting on SEPTA," says SEPTA General Manager John K. Leary Jr. He encouraged area mothers to take advantage of the free Broad Street Line service on Mother's Day, and urged daily car commuters to "sample SEPTA" on "Car-Free Commuter Wednesday."
Throughout the week, SEPTA will join with the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission and area transit agencies to show commuters just how important transit is to the region and the country.-SEPTA via Stan Feldman
