On December 1, 1939, Atlantic Coast Line (ACL) and Florida East Coast Railroad launched the all-coach Champion streamliner service between New York and Florida. The name of the ACL was Champion McDowell Davis, however, that is not where the train got its name. ACL sponsored a contest which was won by Betty Creighton, a secretary from Pittsburgh, who christened the Champion at Washington during its maiden southbound voyage.
