Hi George. I will take the chanche to congratulate you for your
willingness to share us ups and downs, and fixing on the large scale
engines. These insightful webpage is insightful and valuable
information for people like me who is standing on the edge to enter
outdoor modelling. Your page shows the best of what internet has to
offer in sharing information and show others that this can be done. And
it is nice to see the neutral review you have on the items. I took the
liberty to add a link to you in my homepage under Trainstuff section,
so I have an easy way to navigate to your homepage to gain more
information in the future. Best Regards! Ollie Ahokas |

I am a devoted G scaler with only Bachamnn equipment. I have all
the varieties of the 4-6-0 and it it's great to be able to see other G
scalers expieriences on the web. Your technical pages are very
interesting. One thing Bachmann have let us down on is that they never
have supplied factory produced updates to improve older versions. This
is a pity as not everone can afford to buy a BBT chassis even though
these are very good. Tha lates anniversary 4-6-0 is undoubtedly the
best yet but it looks like he same old can motor is still being used.
Does anyone know ? |

I have seen no sites that recomend a excellent product called
DiamondCRET. You can purchase it at Hobby Lobby and stain glass mosaic
sites. It is a very dense and exceptually hard product. Dries rapidly
to removal hardness in your molds. Testure very smooth , replicates
mold details perfectly. A superior product for use with jigstone molds.
Try and you will never use any thing else, even makes strong doors
haven't tried on windows yet. Enjoy |

Please could anyone tell me/ e me what scale the LGB F units work
out at - and do they match up against the USA and Aristocraft freight
cars or do they just look silly and oversized! Am looking for something
to eventually pull the USA-Trains streamliners when they come out but I
don't want to end up wasting my money. Am i better off going with the
USA Trains F3s? Many thanks for any help you can offer me. Steve. |

What a wonderful and inspirational site! Many thanks, George, for
all of the hard work and helpful information you have put into this
site. It will really help me as I intend to start a layout in the near
future (based on Santa Fe practice). Is there any chance you can/will
be doing a review of the USA trains F3s...and has anyone heard any news
about the USA trains 'streamliners' yet and which prototypes they are
modelled on? Best wishes, Steve. |

Thanks again George for your very informative LS site !! Been
having probs' with the AC knuckle couplers but recalled mention of a
'fix' ...lo and behold there it is. Generally I (presently) use H'nLs'
but decided to use the knuckles for mating the snowplow to the SD-45
for snow clearing operations on the RBRR. the plow tends to be left
behind when backing off from a temporary plug of snow ...for another
run at it. It is likely that "lump" you mention that is causing this
prerelease. Now that the snow is hopefully gone for another year
repairs and upgrades to the snowplow can be done w/o affecting
'operations'. Doug C |

I visited your web site . It is very good. You are real train scale
fan. Myself, i have two scales: LGB the great und Fleischmann the
little scale. My wife und i are living in small house with four rooms,
so we have not so much place for trains. When I saw your pictures, I
want to live in america, there is more place for houses and it is not
so expansive like in germany. last year I was the first time in USA and
I am facinated of your country. Where do you live? I m happy, if you
send a little e-mail to me. My LGB was build up for four month in our
rooms, but now , I have to clean up the rooms from my toytrains. It was
the very last moment before my wife will be angry. Have a nice day.
Good night from europe yours Lorenz |

Help for the electrically challenged- George, on page 36-37 of your
how-to guide to the Aristo-Craft Train Engineer it says that "... even
with a double gapped crossover track, they (loops) are not separate".
I'm lost because looking at my Aristo ART-11300-01 30 degree crossing
it looks like it should make a loop separate. What don't I know?

Your diary of your rail holiday in Britain kept me chuckling all
afternoon! Filthy, crowded trains, foul weather, expensive hotels and
inedible food just about sum Britain up as a tourist destination. You
were too kind to the Scots on their culinary prowess. A haute cuisine
meal in Glasgow is "Chips with curry sauce, and for sweet, fried Mars
bar. Like a Hershey bar dipped in batter and fried!" |

I really appreciate the time you have taken to put out your
information with pictures to go with it. It has been real helpful, as I
hope to get started on my outside railroad in the near future. I have
all LBG trains so far, but am interested in the Bachmann Shay. I really
love those engines. Your in-depth explanations on how to install the
electronics and different modifications will help a lot. I find myself
going to your site over and over again. Please keep up the good work.
You have provided hours of pleasure for me and I wish you the best of
luck in all your endeavors! |

I recently purchased an older ART-5470 TE with an ART-5471
Trackside Receiver and an ART-5472 Accessory Controller through Ebay.
Can you fill me in with some facts about this older TE and potential
problems that I may encounter with it? Also, while the original
documentation says the receiver will handle 10 Amps, in the Aristo book
about the Train Engineer I read where it says that this older model is
only rated for 3 Amps. I want to confirm or deny this fact if
possible. |

I model European 1:32 finescale, though I have an interest in the
wonderful USA large scale scene. Your thoughtful and carefully put
together website is a superb resource that I much appreciated stumbling
across. I've visited every day for the last 5 days. Pull up a chair and
grab a beer ... who could refuse! Thanks for making the effort.

This is by far the most informative and detailed site I have
stumbled across in my search for operational details about garden scale
trains. Great insights; excellent illustrations; Much better web site
layout/operation than even the big name train manufactures. It's even
entertaining reading! Author obviously has both a love of the hobby and
LOTS of experience he like to share. Love the candid comments.
Thanks |

Being new to G scale and garden railroading (HO experience only)
your site is a great resource for me. I'm working on layout design now,
looking to begin work in my yard as soon as weather allows. I'm glad to
hear from others new to G scale or interested in being helpful. |

George, have read and re-read your tech tips over the last few
years. Disagree on couplers, I like USA the best; small, stout, and you
can push a consist without the coupler swiveling on its shank (like
AC). Reading connector tips thought I'd mention this. As you know,
MUing engines greatly helps operations; I use "sub-mini" connectors
like small guitar plugs, and a 4" length of wire, jack mounted on each
end of all road engines. Polarity issue solved by dpdt switch in line
with "external inputs" so a flip of the switch(hidden under bottom of
engine) feeds correct polarity to motor power. This small two conductor
"jumper" in line between each engine allows 2, 3 4 or more lash
ups-heats up those power packs- Still looking for the best way to clean
those AC wheels-USA seems to stay cleaner ! Harder coating ? happy
railroading, great site. john tyler |

My wife and I just inherited her family home. It had gone to rack
and ruin in the ten years her brother had it. We have completely gutted
the backyard, except for some brick pathways, a couple of tall,
venerable maples and the 19,000 gallon inground pool. My
train-enthusiast neighbor suggested a large scale train for a hobby. I
went for it. I'm looking at a roughly 50'x75' space for a perimeter
layout (three sides of the yard) with an oval/switchyard in the SW
corner of the yard and a reversing loop in the NW corner of the yard.
The yard is not flat (Fairfax County required natural drainage through
all the properties in the development). So, I have a lot of terracing
and trestle problems to solve. My wife and I are going to landscape
with the usual flora and fauna used in Virginia, both annuals and
perrenials. If anyone has any suggestions on where to start, please let
me know. My first search is determining proper turn radii for a Bachman
electric set (not sure of the scale yet) so that I can begin a CAD
layout. I'm going to the train show at the Maryland fairgrounds in
Timonium next weekend (1/26/02) to get some ideas. Any and all
suggestions are welcome. |

I am an old HO railroader and just recently got interested in
garden railroads. I have an ideal area near the rear of my residence
complete with pond and waterfall. I'm really enthused about getting the
project started. While getting my ideas together for the layout, I have
ordered two Aristocraft SD-45's, some track and freight cars. Thought
their presence in my shop would keep my incentive alive. My compliments
to you, George. Your attention to detail, photos, analysis, and
narratives are the best I have seen anywhere. I was totally impressed
and cannot say enough to tell you how much I appreciate the effort you
have expended in sharing you vast knowledge and expertise. I will be
visiting you often and hope, as time goes by, I may find a way to repay
you for helping me. Thanks, Bill |

George, Without doubt you at least give a glimpse of what hardware
is doing from Aristo-Craft. I'd like to see more applications on
interfacing to other equipment. As LGB Electrical switches versus the
motor kind with the Aristo craft. The ART5475 switch receiver, and
ART5474 Accessories to be specific, or Links to where a non electronic
person can find help. Your links page comes up with some misses, even
though sites are listed. I'd like to see an update there. Your E-mail
address for personal contact comes back as invalid. More's the loss for
me. I think your site more than accomplishes what you set out to do. I
enjoyed your family history page as well. Other's should look in a a
guy's history that does so well a job as you. Respectfully, Dexter
Benton |
