About me: I'm a retired newspaper writer and editor and the author of seven books, one of which is Zephyr: Tracking a Dream Across America, about life aboard Amtrak's California Zephyr in the early 1990s. My wife, Debby, and I winter in Evanston, Illinois, on the Metra North Line (Union Pacific, ex-Chicago & North Western), and summer in Ontonagon, Michigan, on the shore of Lake Superior at the northwest terminus of the Escanaba & Lake Superior Railroad (ex-Milwaukee Road), about to be abandoned. We are lifetime train travelers and every now and then I drag out my Bachmann G scale Ten-Wheeler trainset and set it up on the basement floor for the grandchildren.
