- Cassell's 1899:
Arigna, river and district on the
Shannon, and between Loughs Allen and Meelagh, Boyle barony, North
county Roscommon, Ireland. The river, risin gin county Sligo, flows
south-east into Lough Allen. The district is rich in minerals,
including coal, iron, and limestone. Ironworks on an extensive
scale were established here 1788, but, proving unprofitable under
various managements, were discontinued in 1808.
