Kilkee, town, parish of Kilfearagh (q.v.), South West county Clare Ireland, 9 miles west of Kilrush. Kilkee is a beautiful and rising watering-place on the Atlantic, built on a semicircular strand, a mile in length, at the bend of Moore Bay, and sheltered by the Duggerna Rocks. It is a considerable fishing station, and is surrounded by magificent cliff scenery. The town has good hotel and private accommodation for visitors. The celebrated cave is in the sea face of the cliffs, and can be approached by boat. It is about 300 feet long, by 30 to 60 feet high, and is hung with splendid stalactites, set off by a varicoloured roof. There are some spas in the neighbourhood, and the seaweed known as Irish Moss is gathered on the shores. Population: 1,556. |
