Kilcoe, parish, West Carbery barony, Southwest co Cork, Ireland, 4½ miles west of Skibbereen ; acreage 5,272. The parish lies round the north-eastern shores of Roaringwater Bay, and includes some small islands in that bay. The soil is rough, and consists chiefly of bare rocks of clay-slate, with small patches of light soil on a clay-slate base, which have been almost created by manuring. The parish church was built in 1830. On a tongue of land stand the ruins of Kilcoe Castle, a stronghold of the McCarthys, the remains consisting of a large square tower with a small turret. Population: 909. |
