Layout Statistics

The layout is in HO scale, which is 1:87 scale or 87 times smaller than the prototype (full size). The layout is approximately 24' by 14' set in an around the walls "walk-in" style arrangement. The bench work that supports the layout is "open grid." It has 2 levels or loops each with 2 reversing loops, with crossovers between the two loops. The upper level track has a multi-track yard and turntable, the lower level has two staging tracks in one of the reversing loops, which I mainly use to stage entire trains (consists) or entire passenger trains.

The minimum radius is 24," the track is mostly code Atlas 83 rail, the roadbed is Woodland Scenic's, and the turn-outs are all No. 4 with the exception of the 4-way crossover. The Maximum Grade for the track is 4%.

The trains are controlled with NCE DCC (Digital Command Control) Power Pro with all wireless cabs (that also have plug-in capability around the layout).

The scenery for the mountains and hills is plaster over wire mesh. The backdrop is 1/4"masonite held supported by pine wood supports and joined together with wood spine between the joints (in the rear of the joints) and with joint-tape and joint compound (used for drywall joints) in the front, giving rise to a smooth skyline look. The height of the backdrop is 14.5" and painted in sky blue. Clouds were painted using New London Industries masks/templates (and some of the hills and mountains were also painted with those templates). Cut-outs were made from a variety of back-drop materials such as Walther's "Instant Horizons" city/hotel/business by cutting out the skyline carefully with a sharp No. 11 knife.

Most of the structures are kits from various manufacturers such as Walther's and Woodland Scenic's, but there are a couple of scratch-built structures. Also, some of the kits are craftsman kits.

The working industries on the layout include: orange/fruit/vegetable industry and cattle industry (Town of Santa Ana) as well as an ice house (in the yard area), a slaughterhouse, a couple of food processors, a mill, a textile factory, and fishing and an ocean port ("San Angeles").
