It's Friday night and all the teenagers and young families in town head for Bettie's Diner to have some nice food and to have a good time. The rock 'n roll is loud and the burgers, fries and milkshakes are being prepared at a furious pace inside as more folks keep arriving. But at least one couple is there for more than just the burgers and fries tonight!
It's early evening in the corner of Main Street and Belmont in the small town of Santa Ana. The street lights have just come on and many of the small businesses on Main Street are now closed. The milkman is trying to finish his rounds, while two furniture movers are also trying to make their last delivery before it gets really dark.
Milner's Feed and Seed sells all that the local farmers and cattle ranchers want, including tractors and tires. It's very early in the morning, the sun has just come up, and Milner's has just received a fresh batch of John Deere tractors. Inside, Mr. Milner is making sure that all the inventory is in order before his customers start arriving.
A funeral is being held in the small cemetery behind the small church for Mr. Hightower, a former yardmaster. The widow wails in grief, while all the sudden the ground shakes and a Santa Fe 4-8-4 sounds its whistle and makes its presence known. For a moment, the funeral attendees wonder if this train is being summoned from the heavens by the dearly departed yardmaster or if he will even wake up!!
